For this week’s photo tip, I want to present something totally different. Found below, I offer you a number of quotes from famous photographers. I extend them to you to serve both as motivation and to acquaint you with the artists. The messages conveyed in each are near and dear to me and mirror my thoughts and beliefs about photography. I’ve interspersed five images that reflect what is stated in the quotes. If you don’t recognize a photographer’s name, I encourage you to Google some of their work. I also encourage you to read each quote carefully as the expressed words should entice you to become a better photographer should you choose to heed their messages. ![]() © 2008 Russ Burden
The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera. Dorothea Lange. I wish more people felt that photography was an adventure the same as life itself and felt that their individual feelings were worth expressing. To me, that makes photography more exciting. Harry Callahan The instrument is not the camera but the photographer. Eve Arnold Photography teaches that how well you see has nothing to do with how well you see. Anonymous Good photography speaks through silence. Anonymous For me photography has been a profession, an avocation. Now it has become a way of life. Wynn Bullock ![]() © 2008 Russ Burden
The camera sees more than the eye, so why not make use of it? Edward Weston I am always mentally photographing everything as practice. Minor White When asked how he felt about missing photographs while he reloaded his camera with film, he replied, "There are no photographs while I'm reloading." Garry Winogrand Ultimately, my hope is to amaze myself. The anticipation of discovering new possibilities becomes my greatest joy. Jerry Uelsmann Which of my photographs is my favorite? The one I'm going to take tomorrow. Imogen Cunningham Once the amateur's naive approach and humble willingness to learn fades away, the creative spirit of good photography dies with it. Every professional should remain always in his heart an amateur. Alfred Eisenstaedt Sometimes I do get to places just when God's ready to have somebody click the shutter. There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer. Ansel Adams Dodging and burning are steps to take care of mistakes God made in establishing tonal relationships! Ansel Adams I try to create an emotion through a mood, an appreciation for what's there - something people walk by every day and don't see. Robert Farber The difference in "seeing" between the eye and the lens should make it obvious that a photographer who merely points his camera at an appealing subject and expects to get an appealing picture in return, may be headed for a disappointment. Andreas Feininger The artist's world is limitless. It can be found anywhere, far from where he lives or a few feet away. It is always on his doorstep. Paul Strand ![]() © 2008 Russ Burden
Never have I found the limits of the photographic potential. Every horizon, upon being reached, reveals another beckoning in the distance. Always, I am on the threshold. W. Eugene Smith Available light is any damn light that is available! W. Eugene Smith Sometimes the simplest pictures are the hardest to get. Neil Leifer, You have to be ready for luck. Neil Leifer 36 satisfactory exposures on a roll means a photographer is not trying anything new. Freeman Patterson Photography is a strong tool, a propaganda device, and a weapon for the defense of the environment...and therefore for the fostering of a healthy human race and even very likely for its survival. Eliot Porter I've been asked if I think there will ever come a time when all people come together. I would like to think there will. All we can do is hope and dream and work toward that end. And that's what I've tried to do all my life. Gordon Parks To learn more about this topic, join me on one of my Photographic Nature Tours.
