Whether he is acting as drummer, DJ, producer, engineer, journalist, or any of his any other various capacities, Thompson is solidifying his place as an icon of hip hop culture. Hailing from Philadelphia, he attended the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, where he formed The Roots with classmate and friend Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter. Since then, the group has gone on to be one of the most influential of the past decade, winning a Grammy Award in 2000 for Best Rap Performance by a Group of Duo with their single "You Got Me". Their 2002 album Phrenology was also nominated for best album. Thompson produced D’Angelo’s Grammy-Award winning Vodoo album, and has appeared on records by John Mayer, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Joss Stone, and is currently the musical director for the Dave Chappelle show on Comedy Central.
Recently, Thompson took his Pentax *ist DL around with him while in New York for a Downbeat Magazine cover shoot as well as a roadtrip with some friends. The resulting images show off that his photographic eye is just as good as his musical ear.

Gritty. Doesn't feel as though the person taking the shot knows what they're trying to capture as they're taking it. Not consistently anyway. Half there, half not. Probably not a helpful comment. But a gut reaction anyway.Rob
