The transportation system is one of the best in Europe. You can get almost any where in Amsterdam by walking, bike, buses, subways, automobile or by boat. Some even like the rollerblading approach by using both bike lanes or car lanes. While walking you have to be very aware of bikers who have their own lanes and signals so you can’t just look for cars when crossing you must also look for bikes. ![]() © Art & Gloria Netzer

A water ferry runs through several of the many canals. The canals are deep and with their system of dykes and pumps the water level is controlled to within 6 inches. In Amsterdam a large number of people live in conventional housing or apartments on the water. Many rent or purchase house boats and live right in the canals! ![]() © Art & Gloria Netzer

The Netherlands is noted for agriculture and horticulture. While driving through the countryside you see fields of color and beauty. They are truly a photographers delight. The country accounts for more than half of the worlds cut flowers and bulbs exports. There is a daily auction where buyers bid on available flowers to be shipped to various countries around the world. ![]() © Art & Gloria Netzer

Much of the western half of the country is at or below sea level. For centuries the water levels were controlled by windmills and building dikes to recover the land from the marshes. After an dreadful storm in 1953 taking the lives of over 1,800 people and 200,000 animals drastic measures were taken to prevent a repetition of this human and economic catastrophe from happening again. It was called the Delta Plan and took 33 years to complete. This project took 450 miles of coastline and now all canal water levels are controlled by a coordinated series of dams, barriers and pumps. The old windmills dotted around remain a reminder of the labor invested in the draining of marshes. ![]() © Art & Gloria Netzer

Amsterdam also has a long history, many museums, and reminders that are a must see while there. Among the most popular are the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, and the World War ll Museum. Another popular pastime in and around the city is sampling one or more of the many delicious and local brews! ![]() © Art & Gloria Netzer
