Point and Shoot Month - Use That Macro Setting and Zoom that Lens by Russ Burden

Point and Shoot Month - Use That Macro Setting and Zoom that Lens by Russ Burden

As the final installment in his Point and Shoot Month of articles, Russ Burden discusses how to use the Macro Setting and use the point and shoot zoom.

Article rating: 8.56

For those of you who are regular readers of my weekly photo tips, you know the vast majority are written for users of 35mm SLR’s.  With this in mind, it’s time I give some props to all the point and shooters of the world. Now before all you regular readers grab the mouse and click on another link, read on. Isn’t it about time you had some fun with a point and shoot? Wouldn’t it be nice to get some great shots and not have to lug around your 35mm equipment? Haven’t you thought about getting one or using the one you already bought that is reserved for the others in the family? I’m dedicating the entire month of July’s tips to those who sport and take pride in their digital point and shoots. So spread the word to your point and shoot friends, spouses, and significant others to read the tips each week in July. I also encourage you to look into classes sponsored by the Panasonic Digital Photo Academy. They offer an array for all levels, including one solely dedicated to teaching students how to use their digital point and shoots. Check out www.digitalphotoacademy.com for more information.

The Zoom - Digital point and shoots are still in their baby stages longevity wise but once upon a time most had a fixed focal length lens meaning there was no built in zoom. If you wanted to make the subject bigger you had to get closer and if you couldn’t fit everything into the picture, you had to walk backwards. When zooms were introduced, the cameras  became a lot more versatile. Today’s point and shoots are remarkable in the range they cover. My Panasonic TZ3 goes from a film equivalent of 28mm to 280mm. This allows me to include lots of compositional elements at the 28mm setting even if I’m in tight quarters. It also allows me to get good sports shots at the 280mm setting depending how far away the person is. Additionally, I have every focal length in between to fine tune the composition to my liking. Take advantage of all the focal lengths your camera has by moving the zoom button in small increments. If there’s too much extra material, zoom in a bit. If you can’t quite fit everything in, go to a wider setting.

When you zoom a lens to its longest focal point, everything gets magnified in size. This is fantastic as you can bring the subject closer without having to move from your position. The trade off is as the subject is magnified, so are any mistakes made by the photographer. Longer focal lengths mean needing to hold the camera steadier to prevent blurry looking images. This is where optical stabilization built into many of the newer point and shoots comes in handy. Check to see if your camera has this feature. If not, ask for it in the next one you purchase. It helps steady camera movement when shooting at longer focal lengths. Also with regards to longer focal length shooting, beware of the dreaded digital zoom feature. Make sure the rating for the focal length setting at which the camera is advertised is for the optical zoom, not digital zoom. While it’s true a digital zoom provides a more magnified subject, what it’s doing is cropping into the image. As you continue to zoom the lens, all you’re doing is discarding pixels that surround your subject. The simple translation of this technical aspect is the picture quality suffers a lot.

The Flower - An icon found on many point and shoots is a flower that looks very tulip like. Setting the camera to this icon allows you to take close up images. The accompanying image of the rose was photographed using this macro mode. To access it, turn the dial so the tulip lines up with the default mark on the camera, zoom the lens to its wide setting, move the camera very close to the subject and fire away. If you get too close, the camera will emit a warning sound meaning it won’t be able to focus. This being the case, move it a small amount farther back and try again. Don’t be afraid to get very close. When I photographed the rose, I had the camera only a few inches away from the bloom - my 35mm professional camera won’t even allow me to do this! Read the pages in the manual to get more information about the macro capabilities your camera has. If you really want to learn the ins and outs of your digital point and shoot, look into the class offered by the Panasonic Digital Photo Academy called the Ins and Outs of Your Digital Point and Shoot. It’s a three hour class teaching you about all the features of a digital point and shoot camera.
