For those of you who are regular readers of my weekly photo tips, you know the vast majority are written for users of 35mm SLR’s. With this in mind, it’s time I give some props to all the point and shooters of the world. Now before all you regular readers grab the mouse and click on another link, read on. Isn’t it about time you had some fun with a point and shoot? Wouldn’t it be nice to get some great shots and not have to lug around your 35mm equipment? Haven’t you thought about getting one or using the one you already bought that is reserved for the others in the family? I’m dedicating the entire month of July’s tips to those who sport and take pride in their digital point and shoots. So spread the word to your point and shoot friends, spouses, and significant others to read the tips each week in July. I also encourage you to look into classes sponsored by the Panasonic Digital Photo Academy. They offer an array for all levels, including one solely dedicated to teaching students how to use their digital point and shoots. Check out www.digitalphotoacademy.com for more information.
When you zoom a lens to its longest focal point, everything gets magnified in size. This is fantastic as you can bring the subject closer without having to move from your position. The trade off is as the subject is magnified, so are any mistakes made by the photographer. Longer focal lengths mean needing to hold the camera steadier to prevent blurry looking images. This is where optical stabilization built into many of the newer point and shoots comes in handy. Check to see if your camera has this feature. If not, ask for it in the next one you purchase. It helps steady camera movement when shooting at longer focal lengths. Also with regards to longer focal length shooting, beware of the dreaded digital zoom feature. Make sure the rating for the focal length setting at which the camera is advertised is for the optical zoom, not digital zoom. While it’s true a digital zoom provides a more magnified subject, what it’s doing is cropping into the image. As you continue to zoom the lens, all you’re doing is discarding pixels that surround your subject. The simple translation of this technical aspect is the picture quality suffers a lot.

So You Wanna Be a Nature Photographer
by Russ Burden
I?ve heard it said that if you love what you do, you?ll never work a day in your life. As photography has been a long time profession in addition to being a passion, to some extent the above holds true. But before I encourage you to quit your day job, cash out and hit the road with your camera and camper, hear me out with regards to what I mean by, ?to some extent, this holds true.? |

Selective Focus
by Russ Burden
Lens manufacturers continuously pour large chunks of money from their budgets into research and development of faster and sharper lenses. Zoom lenses are now the standard where at one time, if you wanted a sharp image, they were considered amateurish at best. The sharp zooms of today combined with precise autofocus technology allow tack sharp images to be made fairly easily. Ironically, the out of focus areas in a photograph are equally as important as sharp ones if the picture is to be successful. Herein lies the concept of selective focus. |

Get Motivated
by Russ Burden
Every photographer I know has experienced a period when, at one time or another, he or she hits the wall and needs to create distance between themselves and the camera. Call it a lull, rejuvenation period or simply time off, it?s necessary to maintain creativity. These periods of down time are normal and should be taken in stride. But what happens if these lulls of a few days evolve into a week or even longer. Then it becomes an issue. If this happens to you, try some of the following techniques I?ve heard about or used first hand to get re-motivated. |

Tips for Photographing Mountains
There?s an old expression that?s a play on words: ?Life?s A Beach.? I have a T Shirt that says, ?Life?s A Mountain, Not A Beach.? John Denver sang about a Rocky Mountain High. For you, in that my song writing ability is poor, I?m writing you an article about how to capture great images of mountains. |

Creating An Engagement Photo
by Russ Burden
An engagement photo is an important picture to do correctly. It will be seen by many when it appears in the newspaper announcing the couple?s engagement. It will be prominently displayed in the proud parents? homes as a framed enlargement. It may even go out in the invitations in the form af a wallet. It needs to capture the love and happiness that exists between the future bride and groom. With all these factors in mind, it?s important to learn the basics before you volunteer your services. Here are a few tips to get you started. |

Step Away from the Car
by Russ Burden
Over the years I?ve been photographing nature, I?ve accumulated my fair share of good images that I?ve made by being close to the car. The only problem is they look like everyone else?s shots. Unless the light is doing something very dramatic, these shots are a dime a dozen. |

Capturing Waterfalls
by Russ Burden
Capturing great waterfall shots is not a difficult task. Keys to getting them are knowing what time of year to be there to get the best water flow, what time of day to photograph them, and deciding what shutter speed to use to either freeze the motion of the water or exaggerate its movement. Otherwise the same basic rules of good photography apply with regards to composition, handling the background, light, etc. |

Change the Clich?
by Russ Burden
As a leader of photo tours to many of the classic natural destinations in the United States, I need to bring my participants to the photographic icons of each location. These locations have been shot tens of thousands of times yet we gravitate toward them because of their beauty. They are the post card shots we all want. As we stand elbow to elbow with many other photographers, I often wonder what we?re trying to accomplish unless something new or different is tried. But every time I go to one of these places, everyone is using the same focal length as the postcard and framing it the same way. I encourage you to try something different. Here are a few tips to get you started. |

Choosing the Proper Tripod
by Russ Burden
A tripod is an essential piece of equipment. Its use has a profound effect on the quality of an image. Often heard at camera club meetings is the debate between Nikon vs. Canon or Mac vs. PC, but seldom are words uttered putting Slik on a higher pedestal than Gitzo, Benbo, or Bogen. A seven thousand dollar lens attached to an eight thousand dollar body will net a low grade image if not supported by a good tripod. To help make the right purchase or to encourage you to replace a flimsy one, found below are ideas about what to look for or think about before making a purchase. |

Wildlife
by Russ Burden
Wildlife photography is an art, a sport, a pursuit, patience challenger, persistence tester, an effort in research, a bit of luck, and many other concepts all bundled together. Some days offer a plethora of image making while others end with the camera never raised to the eye. Weather, animal activity, time of day, right place right time, and more help determine the success of the shoot. |

Textures - Rule Breakers and Rule Followers
by Russ Burden
Textures come in all shapes and sizes. From a close up of a moth?s wing to an array of balconies of a high rise hotel, they can be found almost anywhere. They can be soft like the feathers of a bird, fragile as peeling paint, delicate as ripples of sand, patterned like a plowed farm field, etc. The key in revealing them is the direction and hardness of the light. |
