Great tip and explanation of the value of the layer mask. Prior to reading this, (using a tripod) I would have taken three identical shots: one exposed for highlights, one for shadow detail, and one for midtones.

Can't you get the same affect with less work by merging the imasges with the HDR tool in Photoshop or Photomatrix?
