He brought us the rats scurrying on NYC sidewalks late at night and now Will Lugo is back with another dreamlike portfolio. While the rats might remain as is and here forever, Will's most recent models will soon be a shrine to commemorate an era gone by.

Back in 1876, Charles Looff, a Danish Woodcarver, gave us the first ride of Coney Island, fanciful horses and other animals, illuminated by kerosene lamps, 3 years before Edison's light bulbs appeared. (Wikipedia) Soon the locale was internationally known and grew to a relatively spectacular setting. Up until WWII, Coney Island was the place to be. Then air-conditioned movie theaters and cars that conveniently transported vacationers to quiet state parks, lessened the popularity of the iconic family destination. Worse, the 50's brought gang violence and a number of fires. Robert Moses saw little future in the amusement park and the lack of consumer interest and city backing painted a picture of doom for Coney Island.

But still, there is a timeless beauty and colorful nostalgia inherent to Coney Island as it stands now. Luckily, night-time doorman and part time photographer Lugo, pulled himself out of bed to immortalize what may soon fall the the profit and loss efforts of big time developers. Will has effectively used the zoom on his Canon Super A80. The bright sunlight as a brilliant backdrop compliments the multi-chromatic rides that bring an almost surreal sensibility to mind. Somehow, the photos present a cleaner and crisper rendition of a setting that today, most people think of as a bit tawdry and run down. The scene is actually quite inviting.

The clarity and details of each photograh help bring New York's Coney Island Park and its visitors into full "life, not just clear view. The photos are simply breath taking because they make me want to hurry up and get over to Coney Island Park any way I can, right now; especially having knowledge that's it's going going ... and with it particular memories stored way in the back of my minds memory-bank embracing my vists to Coney Island Park during a time in my life when I was young, care free, and with little or no emphasis on what the future might hold ... except for more fun! And, no thoughts of a husband, kids, monthly mortgage and utilities, a car note, what foods were needed for breakfast, lunch or dinner, health care or its costs ... and all that jazz! So, Thanks for the memories!
