“We sang songs that carried in their melodies all the sounds of nature- the running of waters, the sighing of winds, and the calls of the animals.  Teach these to your children that they may come to love nature as we love it.”
–Grand Council Fire of American Indians to the Mayor of Chicago, December 1927.

This quote and many others punctuate the beauty of Robert Castellino’s photographs in his book, Colorado: Heart and Soul.  Indeed, with this book, he tries to teach us to love nature as he loves it. Castellino’s literary and photographic work endeavors to convey the vitality of Colorado, to expose Colorado’s hidden treasures and to celebrate it’s apparent ones.  Castellino has a great love for the Centennial State and through this book he imparts his deep feeling to the reader. He, like writer Wallace Stegner, writes about a sense of place, “making a difference where you live and having a story to tell because you had lived there a long time.”

Certainly, Castellino does have a story to tell.  Living in Colorado for thirty-one years, he has photographed much of Colorado and, he hopes, captured some of its story.  His photographs record the history, the changing seasons, the people whom he considers to be the real heart of Colorado, the waters and the reflections they produce and inspire, and the ways in which commerce and commercial development presently impact the state.

Much of Colorado is a dedicated effort to protect this rich and vastly important land.  Yet Castellino does not just present the reader with a list of facts about the depletion of Colorado’s non-renewable energy sources, the acid rain, the reckless land development, the polluted air- all things that put pressure on one of our world’s most valuable treasures, Colorado’s forests, parks, rivers, mountains, deserts, and prairie grasslands.  He also gives us a reason to care, a reason to celebrate, a reason to love as he loves.  With his art he communicates the sense of sacredness; he shows us the treasures and the unexplored depths of nature’s offering.  Colorado: Heart and Soul shows us what we are fighting for in hopes that it may help the preservation of Colorado’s many treasures and that we might all become stewards of this magical part of planet earth.
