Letter from the Director

To look at the history of photography is to look at the future. Let's look at a crazy cool revolutionary time in photographic history...

In the midst of the first World War Marcel Duchamp said that if all of western civilization's fantastic feats in the realms of science, politics and religion all culminate in war- then said civilization can be defined as "stupid". The startling fact that our entire history as a society could result in an apparently infectious desire to kill one another seemed so preposterous- so absurd to Duchamp- that the only thing he could think of to do was to try and create art that was just as absurd. He then went on to form the New York chapter of the Dada movement with Man Ray and Francis Picabia. Dada art (actually anti-art) rejected all preceding concepts of art and aesthetics. Dada was a movement whose intent was to offend. They rejected all logic- citing the war as proof that our society (based on logic) had become illogical.

How bizarre that the world would be at war with itself. How strange that for no good reason men were murdering each other with out cause. In the face of such extravagant carnage what is an artist to do? How do you convey the vulgarity of modern warfare to an audience who is blind to it?

Simply put, we as human beings were killing one another at a rate hitherto unheard of in the history of the human race- and nobody really knew why we were doing it. There was no cause for it that anyone at the time understood, but in four years 40 million people would die.

So, Duchamp gave up painting and entered a urinal into the first annual exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists in New York. What else is there to do? The Dada movement became a reaction to the world around it- a voice of confusion answering the call of a confused world.

Dada artists (and other revolutionary artists inspired by Dada artists) who used photography as their medium began questioning the idea of what a photograph was, and what photography was for. Photography was a powerful tool in the hands of these artists  (and future artists) for the simple reason that the images being produced were of this world. That is, they depict a reality that the viewer will recognize as a supposed truth- a truth that the artist can subvert into there own message. What photographers began to realize was how important the concepts behind the images were. The ideas were more important than the aesthetics. Revolutionary!

Many photographers were inspired by the grossness of western civilization and began fearlessly reflecting their disgust through their art and changing our concepts of photography along the way; Hannah Hoch invented the photo collage with pieces like "Cut with the Dada Kitchen Knife through the Last Weimar Beer-Belly Cultural Epoch in Germany", Raoul Hausman (Hannah's partner) also did a number of collage pieces, John Heartfield who subverted Nazi propaganda with his own anti-Nazi photo illustrations, Maurice Tabard (from the surrealists) created work heavily drenched in Freudian sexual inuendos, Raoul Ubac with his bizarre surrealist bodyscapes, Hans Bellmer and his creepy doll collections, and of course Man Ray. Man Ray disregarded the idea that art was something precious. He put forth the idea that to be creative one had to have a healthy disregard for the materials, that is- one must destroy to create.

It is important to look back and see the truly revolutionary things being done in photography 80-90 years ago, a time when current photographers tend to think everyone was making landscapes and static portraits. Look back, explore, investigate!

When you find something interesting come in and lets talk about it, remember teatime is everyday at 4:00pm.

See you then!

Greg Cradick
