The Photoshop Elements Book for Digital Photographers (New Riders Press)

The Photoshop Elements Book for Digital Photographers (New Riders Press)

by Scott Kelby
Reviewed by Tina Maas

If you haven't found the perfect gift for the digital photographer on your Christmas list look no further.  A clever continuation to his previous "how-to" Photoshop books Scott Kelby's latest publication is a wonderful, witty and educational resource that will be pulled off the shelf time and time again.

As usual Kelby’s tips and 'tongue in cheek' advice are extremely valuable, practical and stem from his extensive experience as a teacher and lecturer for Adobe. Despite an overwhelming number of Photoshop books on the market, the continuous queries of his students led him to realize the urgent need for this type of book.

The book caters specifically to the intermediate to advanced Photoshop Elements user and thankfully does not explain every possible dialog box or reiterate the most basic Photoshop skills. Though it is geared largely towards digital photographers  don't expect to find explanations on the latest digital cameras or recommendations for buying the right printer.

What you can expect to find is real world, hands on advice photographers need to help them achieve success in the rapidly expanding digital arena beginning literally at the point of downloading your images from your flash card and taking you step by step from there through to color corrections, special photographic effects and advanced retouching and repairing skills.

The book’s clear structure and overview enables it to be used as a learner’s manual and followed through in a linear fashion as well as a quick reference guide that helps you to polish up or acquire new skills in selective areas.

An example of the invaluable tips this book has to offer come in the form of renaming large amounts of files with the batching command, a variety of sharpening options (including Scott’s generous disclosure of some numbers to use as starting points), as well as some simple tricks that will be used time and again like fixing red eye and erasing unsightly blemishes. The book is written in a humorous, entertaining style and additionally livened up by a lot of colorful example pictures to help get the results you want.

What makes this book stand out from a lot of others in the field is that it is really focused on the needs of photographers while being extremely practical, fun and easy to use.

For anyone serious about digital photography, regardless of whether or not they've been taking pictures for ten years or ten days.  This book has a little something for everyone.  If you want an effective resource from which to learn more about fine-tuning your digital images, this book is highly recommended.
