by John Messinger Community: A Three Part Photo Essay
"It could be said of me that in this book I have only made up a bunch of other men's flowers, providing of my own only the string that ties them together." - Montaigne 1533 - 92
John A. Messinger is a seventeen year-old senior at Ross High School in
East Hampton, New York.
His formal study of photography began during
his sophomore year, though he has been interested in the art for many
years. In addition to taking courses at school, John attended two
Rockport College workshops during his junior year, one in Havana, Cuba,
and the Young Photographers Workshop in Maine.
The work you are about to see is from one of John's most recent projects, which
was a compilation of three photo essays based on the theme of community;
these were published in his book entitled "strings" and presented as his
senior project, a requirement for graduation.
John plans on pursuing
a major in photography when he begins college next year; he is currently
considering offers from New York University, Boston University, and
Syracuse University.
