After receiving my grandmother's old Nikon a year and a half ago I have been teaching myself black and white photography. This series is a study and illustration of smokers nursing at their poison. It includes New York and Los Angeles smokers, some of whom I know, and others, strangers captured in the act. A variety of film and paper were used here, and no digital manipulation was employed. "SMOKERS" was a long and creative process, both in the field, behind the camera, with even more time spent daily at an enlarger in the darkroom. In the printing process, I was able to extend the images' depth and expression beyond what I pre-visualized and saw in the camera's viewfinder, especially through creative uses of chemicals and diffused light. Throwing the final prints on a flatbed scanner, to view an 11x14 fiber print as a 72dpi jpg does seem to nullify the darkroom experience, but now people may actually see it. -Elliot Goldstein 2006 ![]() © 2006 Elliot Goldstein
