Barbara Bordnick is an internationally renowned portrait and fashion photographer. Over the past 27 years her work has won numerous awards and been featured in many known publications, newspapers, and television programs including The New York Times Magazine, Harper's Bazaar, and ABC “Good Morning America”. When describing her work behind the camera, Barbara has been quoted as saying, “Through photography I can touch people in a way I never would have done otherwise. And that’s been a great privilege”. She continues to touch and engage her readers in her new book, Searchings: Secret Landscapes of Flowers. Having always assumed that “flower” books were only of interest to little old ladies and avid gardeners I was both surprised and impressed by her fresh and exciting take on this genre. In her introduction Barbara describes being a little girl who in order to “escape the demands of the adult world” would hide under the covers and watch as the images in her head as they “rhythmically changed sizes, textures, shapes, and colors, continually forming new worlds”. In her book she shares this childlike wonder. Using macro photography she invites us into a world where flowers are larger than life. Through 69 color plates (including a breathtaking centerfold) she takes hold of our imaginations and creates an intimate and original world of flowers. This close up, each stem and petal is a unique landscape. Some are soft and ethereal, others bold and vibrant. The detail and variety of the flowers are beautiful. There is a definite feeling of magic in her work. She has the ability to take something from our everyday surroundings and transform into an extraordinary image of shape, texture, and color. Barbara Bordnick’s talent and passion for her subject is inspiring. I highly recommend Searchings: Secret Landscapes of Flowers to those who are already nature enthusiasts and to people like myself who will never pass a flower bed again without stopping for a second look.
