At the end of September into the first of October I had the opportunity, as a mentor, to lead the Popular Photography and Imaging Mentor Series trek to Turkey, where over 20 trekkers participated.  This trek to Turkey marked the beginning of a new and exciting element to the Mentor Series program, as Dell joined as a sponsor with their Dell Precision™ line of workstations, more specifically with the M70 mobile workstation which provided us with the performance and ability to greatly enhance the image manipulation segment.

The destination was a wonderful experience with incredible photographic opportunities.  Staying the first two nights along the Aegean Sea and visiting the ancient city of Ephesus was a great starting point. The amount of trekkers who are now shooting digital is truly amazing. Teaching in and around the ruins, with the ability to review images as they’re taken is helping to speed up that learning curve.  In the evening we then have the opportunity to review some of the images that were taken, which allows me to do a critique session.

In the past I have found that many of my students do not have the proper computer equipment out in the field.  With Dell’s sponsorship of this photo workshop series, participants will now have the opportunity to view, work with, and experiment with the latest technologies built into the M70 mobile workstation. The computer offers the Microsoft Windows XP Professional operating system, which is an incredibly stable and intuitive operating platform for photographers of every skill level. As a photographer it is absolutely essential to feel comfortable that your computer is going to perform flawlessly - whether out in the field or editing and correcting images at home. The M70’s ability to open up and process large photo files quickly impressed all on hand.  The wireless capabilities of the M70 utilizing Intel® Centrino® Wireless technology were also very exciting and offer new levels of remote flexibility.

Dien, one of the participants, who is a programmer out of the Oregon area and a frequent participant of the Mentor Series program was enthusiastic about this Dell workstation and it’s capabilities for the “graphic artist”, a discipline which we have all had to adapt in this era of digital photography.  During one of the discussions about notebook technology, a suggestion from several of the participants was that for the travel/nature/wildlife photographer who is typically out in the field a majority of the time, a lighter notebook is preferred.

The next destination was Pamukkale and the stunning cascades of natural limestone.  This stop was on the way to the central Turkey and Cappadocia, where we explored the “fairy tale” landscape for the next two full days. One of the highlights of the entire trip was the Hot Air Balloon adventure, which we had to get up at 4:30am for in order to be in the air and catch the first light, and photograph the rock and land formations below us.

We ended the trek in Istanbul, which is one of the world’s most scenic cities.  From the old city we visited the Blue Mosques, Topkapi palace and the monumental Hagia Sophia.  On the last night in Istanbul we did a digital program, showing all of the trekkers work over the entire stay in Turkey. All of the images were downloaded onto the M70 which connected so well to the digital projector and the program came off without a hitch, which is always such a relief.

This was a very successful trek with a wonderful destination, great experiences and a learning venue for all. This was especially true with the participation of Dell and their workstation line of computers.

According to our trekkers in Turkey, this is a winning system for Dell on all accounts.
