Patrotism: New York City After The Tragedy

Patrotism: New York City After The Tragedy

Article rating: 6.56

Hal Rosenblum, a senior residing in Manhattan, born and raised in New York City.

"I visited Ground Zero a few days after 9/11 and looked on in horror and disbelief, as did everyone else that I stood pressed shoulder to shoulder with on the streets surrounding the devastation. It was difficult to relate the impact of the scene that was before my eyes.”

“And then, shortly afterward, it appeared…red, white and blue followed by so many other symbols of patriotism, all over the city and throughout the entire country. As an amateur photographer I was compelled to take up my camera and capture these new sights, people and places. My collection of images now belong to a photo project called “Patriotism: New York City After the Tragedy.” Over the past year I have ventured to various parts of the city; Ground Zero, Union Square, Battery Park, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, Long Island City, Fifth Avenue during the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the NYC Marathon as well many other lesser known areas to photograph New York’s response.”

Tribute in Light: The brief display during April 2002
‘Tribute in Light’, the two columns of light that beamed skyward from the Ground Zero especially intrigued me. It is my hope that through these photographs we shall be reminded of our wonderful country, our freedom within it, all those who protect it now and have so in the past, and of course, the memories of the thousands that lost their lives on that momentous day in September 2001.”
