Most photographers fall into one of two camps: those who photograph people and those who photograph things—landscapes, architecture or still life. Lin Alder is a rare talent who seamlessly combines the two camps to create powerful images for both editorial and commercial clients. With publications ranging from National Geographic Adventure and the New York Times to GEO magazine and catalogs for Patagonia, the outdoor gear company, Alder’s people/landscape style is one with broad appeal.

Alder first picked up a camera at the age of 16 and quickly developed a passion for landscape and nature photography. Using Ansel Adams’ dramatic black and whites for inspiration, Alder strictly kept people out of his pictures as a teenager while backpacking through America’s desert southwest with a 4 x 5 Graflex.

During the next decade, Alder’s interests evolved beyond strict landscapes as he asked his outdoorsy friends to be in pictures to add scale and complexity. Soon, Alder began selling these photos to the companies that make outdoor gear—and his career was launched.

More recently, Nikon World, Outdoor Photographer and Shutterbug magazines have each published features on Alder’s work. He recently attended the prestigious Eddie Adams workshop in New York and was then invited to return to help run the event. Alder’s stock images are represented by Getty Images and workbookstock.com.

Now, Alder travels the world to create stock and assignment images for clients and teach aspiring photographers how to express their soul through photography. His current workshops include 4-day LL Bean Outdoor Discovery School courses in Maine each summer.
