Kevin Terrell

Fashion Photographer

Article by Lauren Ragland

Kevin Terrell offers his tips for the "pro-sumer" photo jock.

Article rating: 8.12

The consummate digital photographer, Kevin Terrell ignores the rules and traditions of yore and opts for a modern approach to taking fashion, glamour, and commercial pictures.  He isn’t dependant on any one particular camera or lens, lighting or setting to get the image he wants.  Like most photographers, Terrell’s main objective is to get the best picture possible, but to do so, unlike many, he works with a great deal of spontaneity.  His approach is similar to that of a disc jockey, and in fact he refers to himself as a photo jock.  When at a shoot, Terrell responds to the setting, people, models, even music, making on-the-spot decisions to capture the image he wants.  He experiments a lot with an array of equipment, lighting, and cameras, not always of the ‘professional’ variety.

The digital camera undoubtedly gives Terrell the immediacy and flexibility he needs.  Without it, he may have never become a photographer, which would be such a shame since in a mere three years he has gone from photo hobbyist to professional photographer with a client list that includes Sony, Ecko, and the hip-hop artist Nelly.  For many years,
Terrell didn’t own a camera and bought disposable ones whenever the need came up.  As a manager of recording artists and producers, he was often snapping pictures of special events for his own personal photo albums.  But it wasn’t until he was going to a photo shoot for one of his clients, the Ying Yang Twins, which he decided to purchase a Sony 707 digital camera.  Something clicked, and he started photographing his friends, such as the Crash Test Honnies and Falcons cheerleaders.  The right people saw his work and called him for his rates.

From there, one thing has led to another at an accelerated rate.  He is the founder of Rumba! Digital Magazine Xtreme, an online magazine with over a half million subscribers, and has clients such as Sony, Clear Channel, 98 rock, and Marc Ecko.  Terrell is also profiled on onemodelplace.com, one of the largest photographer/model sites on the Internet.

It’s clear that after having accomplished so much in such a short period of time that Terrell has found his niche.  His work represents much of what can be accomplished with digital photography and his approach exemplifies much that is possible.
