We all know that Henry Winkler is a celebrated actor, but did you know that he is also an avid photographer? Maybe you didn't know this because up until recently, only family and friends were able to see Winkler's mesmerizing nature and travel images.
Henry Winkler, actor, producer and director. His work has won the attention of audiences and critics worldwide. Although many viewers recognize Winkler as the "Fonz" from the '70s sitcom, "Happy Days," he has starred in numerous features and films for television. Most recently, he starred, for 11 months, on Broadway in Neil Simon's "The Dinner Party," received an Emmy nomination for his guest-starring role on "The Practice," and appeared in Wes Craven's "Scream" and Adam Sandler's "The Waterboy."
Born and raised in NYC, Winkler attended Emerson College in Boston and the Yale School of Drama. In 1973, he moved to California and landed guest appearances on "The Mary Tyler More Show" and "The Bob Newhart Show." Then, on October 30, Winkler's 28th birthday, he was cast as Arthur Fonzarelli on "Happy Days." He portrayed "The Fonz" for 10 seasons (1972-1984).
For his work on "Happy Days," Winkler was awarded two consecutive Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor in a Comedy Series (1976-77), three consecutive Emmy nominations for Best Actor in a Comedy Series and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In addition to his acting credits, Winkler is a highly successful producer and director. As a producer, his credits include the series' "MacGyver," "Sightings," "Dead Man's Gun" and "So Weird" in addition to several after-school specials and movies for television. He also produced and hosted the award-winning documentary "Who Are the DeBolt's and Where Did They Get 19 Kids?"
As a director, his credits include the feature films "Memories of Me" starring Billy Crystal and Alan King, "Cop and 1/2" starring Burt Reynolds and the made-for-television movie, "A Smokey Mountain Christmas" starring Dolly Parton.
"There are a lot of hungry, talented and creative people out there and I want to work with them," Henry says. "I try to be totally open because one never knows where the great ideas will come from."
"Success, to me, is making a positive contribution," he maintains. "My goal is to infuse and maintain a level of integrity in every project I undertake; to be true to myself and the things I believe in."
Beyond the screen and stage, Winkler's commitment to children's causes probably gives him the most satisfaction of all. (He says that had he not succeeded as an actor, he would have become a child psychologist because of his deep interest in working with children. And work with children he does.) With his wife, Stacey, he is a founding member of The Children's Action network. He is also a founding member of United Friend of the Children, and, for years, co-hosted the United Cerebral Palsy telethons...to name but a few. For his efforts, he has been awarded the United Nations Peace Prize, B'nai B'rith Champion of Youth Award and the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Artes et Lettres, (the French Government's highest civilian honor).
It should come as no surprise that Henry Winkler places great value on family. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and is the father of three children: Jed (from Stacey's previous marriage), Zoe, and Max.
