The Advanced Photo System was introduced in April 1996 as the result of an industry wide initiative to create a new amateur film format for the twenty-first century. Currently there are more than one hundred camera and film manufacturers that are licensing this technology and offering Advanced Photo System products. There are significant consumer benefits to using the Advanced Photo System, and it is likely to remain an important consumer imaging format well into the next century.

Prices for Advanced Photo System products are generally in the range of ten to fifteen percent higher than similar products in the 35mm format. However, it is difficult to make direct head-to-head comparisons since the Advanced Photo System offers consumer benefits which are not available in the more traditional processes.
GRANULARITY
Describes a negative or film that shows a granulated structure, usually used to describe the degree of granularity that is visible. GRAY CARD
Also known as the “Kodak neutral test card,” a gray card is an 8" X 10" (20 cm by 25.5 cm) card, about 1/8" thick, that is uniformly gray on one side. The gray side reflects precisely 18% of the white light that strikes it (corresponding to the calibration of a reflected-light meter). Hide, another word for “Blind,” is an enclosure that provides a concealed camera position within, and overlooking, an animal’s territory. It is called a "hide" because it is meant to hide a photographer from the animals’ vision. I'm making my vacation plans for this year. Can it be processed in a local minilab offering one-hour service?
Yes it can. Processing and printing of the Advanced Photo System film can be done by a local processing lab and returned to the consumer in approximately one hour if the lab has upgraded their photofinishing equipment to take advantage of the Advanced Photo System. In those instances where a local lab has not yet upgraded their equipment, they are able to send it to an off-site facility for processing and printing. In that case however, it may take a few days for the processed film to be returned.
What are the major consumer benefits of the Advanced Photo System?
Three primary consumer benefits include a redesigned film cassette which provides foolproof drop-in loading. Plus, users can select from a choice of three different print formats for each picture on a roll of film. The choices are "C" for classic snapshots (4 x 6"), "H" for HDTV format producing wider prints (4 x 7") perfect for groups and "P" for stunning panoramic views. And, every processed roll of film is returned with an index print showing miniature views of every frame to use as a guide to ordering reprints. Other benefits of the Advanced Photo System include smaller cameras, sharper pictures and more consistent, reliable photofinishing thanks to new "hybrid" film technology. This new hybrid film design permits a camera to "communicate" with the photofinishing equipment via digital and optical information recorded at the time an exposure is made. This results in better looking prints that more accurately portray what the photographer saw at the time the picture was made.
