35mm Film Format

35mm Film Format

35mm Film
Whatever the occasion or the subject, for decades average consumers have taken their pictures on 35mm film. This popular film type has long been considered the standard format of photojournalists and serious amateur photographers. While this still remains true, this type of film is also used in most amateur point-and-shoot cameras, as well as many single-use cameras.

Because 35mm film has been around since the 1930's, doesn't it represent old technology?
It is true that the 35mm film format has been widely used for decades. However, film emulsions -- the image-forming layers found on today's films -- are far more sophisticated and capable of capturing clear, sharp pictures across a wide range of lighting conditions than they were even five years ago.

Flag Day - USA
On June 14th Flag Day is celebrated. People hang red, white and blue ribbons on buildings and things. The 50 stars on the flag stand for the 50 staes. The 13 stripes stand for the original 13 colonies. We have a sculpture to represent the United States. It has two marines holding a flag in their hands. It is called Iwo Jima.

GRADATED FILTER

Also called a “Graduated” filter. A filter that is not uniformly dense, but that gradually changes its density across the filter’s field. A Gradated neutral density filter is clear from one edge to approximately the middle of the filter, then gradually increase in density towards the opposite edge. Colored gradated filters gradually change color density across the filter’s field.

GRADATION
(1) An image’s tonal contrast range. (2) The range of light and dark tones in a subject that a film is capable of showing (i.e. how a film reproduces contrast). (3) The gradual changing of one tint or shade to another by very small degrees.

GRADE
A system of classifying the contrast of photographic papers used in making black and white prints, ranging from 0 to 5 (soft to hard).

GRAIN

Minute crystals of silver halides in the light-sensitive emulsion of film that react when exposed to light, turning black, are called “grains.” (See Graininess of film.)

GRAININESS
Graininess occurs when clumps of individual grains are large and irregularly spaced out in the negative. They are visible to the naked eye in the finished print, particularly enlargements, as sand-like particles. When this occurs, the picture appears “grainy.”

Should I replace my 35mm camera with another type?
If you own a 35mm camera today and are happy with the pictures you get, there is probably no reason to replace your current camera. However, the new Advanced Photo System does offer many user-friendly features designed for occasional picture takers. For instance, the Advanced Photo System utilizes a smaller film cassette which provides foolproof drop-in loading, a choice of three different print formats and an index print showing miniature views of every frame on a roll of film. The index print not only helps to organize your negatives, it also simplifies the process of ordering reprints.

What does the future hold for traditional 35mm film and cameras?
Traditional 35mm film and cameras will remain the dominant format for many professional and serious amateur photographers for decades. However, it is likely that amateur photographers -- typical of most consumers -- will find that newer film and camera formats, such as The Advanced Photo System and digital, may offer some useful features that makes a new camera purchase worth looking into.

What kinds of films are available in the 35mm format?
The 35mm film format offers the widest variety of emulsions including color negative (for prints), color transparency (for slides) as well as black-and-white and special purpose emulsions for creative and scientific applications.
