Shutter Speed

Shutter Speed

Professional photographer Darryl Fong offers a summer photo tip.

At the east end of Waikiki, bodysurfers and boogieboarders hang out at the end of a pier and watch the late afternoon action. There were some 8' swells coming in on this afternoon, and from the end of the pier, you could watch the boarders on either side of you ride the waves in.  As the waves hit, a wall of white foam would splash up and over the end of the pier, creating an interesting back-lit shot. I noticed that the "cool guys" were unfazed by the splash, while others (esp. with cameras!) took cover.  I chose a high shutter speed to stop the rushing water, and contrast it with the laid-back postures of the boarders.

Lens (mm): 10
ISO: 400
Aperture: 16
Shutter: 1/500
