Look for Secret Sand Landscapes

Professional Photographer Elizabeth Opalenik offers a photo tip and location for National Photo Month.

Article rating: 8.33

Location: Berkeley Marina - Berkeley, CA

Sunday mornings during spring I like to take a meditative walk with my dog and camera at the Berkeley Marina.  Since I believe that we photograph with each of our senses, it is a time to allow all of them to fill my head and heart with creativity.  The landscape early and late is a visual smorgasbord of red clover, purple flowers, delicate wild grasses and red winged blackbirds announcing their presence in the world.  As I stroll the curving dirt paths, which border the Bay looking at the Golden Gate Bridge I find myself in the middle of a Richard Mirasch photograph, or if I focus on the many dogs and their owners, I could be on a picnic with Cartier Bresson.  Mostly I use this time to be inspired and centered and if I am lucky in the early and late light, I then head to one of the many inlets from Emery Bay to Point Isabelle to see what else there is.  If you catch the low tide during March through May you are rewarded, for an hour or so, with another world left in the sand for your photographic pleasure. I call them my "ladies dancing"  or "trees as beings" as I reflect on photographs as self portraits and finding the beauty within. There is a walking/bike path that borders the East Bay from Emeryville to Point Isabelle in Berkeley.  Even if you don't find the "beach forests" , enjoy the view.
