How Looking Down Is Looking Up

How Looking Down Is Looking Up

Professional photographer Rick Wright offers a summer photo tip.

Article rating: 10.00

Looking down is looking up (or penance for pennants). Whenever you get wrestling with a composition and frustration begins, consider going to higher ground. These colorful pennants at the Church of 100 Doors on Paros Island intrigued me, yet presented compositional difficulties: distracting foliage, colorful blue sky, bright sun and light. Instead of sticking around in the courtyard (and shooting skyward), I climbed the stairs and shot this image from an upper story window (shooting down). The bright flag colors flourished once they were played off the nearly monochromatic courtyard stone. By including a third shadow line at far left, I added a bit of mystery. I waited for the wind to be just right, chose a fast shutter of 1/500th, and showcased the Greek flag at its fullest extension. Aiming low in life sometimes proves fruitful.
