Professional photographer Rick Wright offers a summer photo tip.

We can all use a little shade in the summer, and even more true in photography! The contrast between the dark cat and dark shade with the white-washed wall and bright blue sky creates great interest, motion, energy. While the cat reclined on the step, I spent my time composing the image to make use of all the repeating triangular forms. Triangular walls, terracotta pots, pole wires, stair column in perspective. In the moment of composing, the cat suddenly sat up adding his full complement of triangles: ears, eyes, body shape, and head. The image really took off at this point and I resisted the urge to use fill flash, choosing instead to keep the moodiness and emphasize the cat’s cool use of shade during a sweltering day. I metered in the middle gray regions of the image and then set my camera manually to keep clicking with my friendly, cooperative subject.
