10 Tips & Techniques
Kevin Terrell offers his tips for the "pro-sumer" photo jock. Article rating: 5.86 |
These tips are not new to the experienced working pro photographer, but may come in handy for those looking to become the ultimate glamour and fashion pro-sumer photo jock.
1. Concentrate on the shooty instead of the booty.
A scantily clothed model can sometimes be a distraction but the focus should be on nailing the great shot...only.

2. SEX
Shoot-EXperiment...I've grown through my mistakes...and some of my mistakes are my best images...don’t be afraid to venture outside the box.

3. Collect great images Before I started shooting, I kept a notebook of hot photos...glamour, swimwear, advertising and more...I become inspired by the work...I still get the "wow" effect every time I flip through Zink Magazine.

4. Play with alternative lighting. Before I purchased my studio lighting systems and after I discovered that real photographers don’t use the little flash on top of the camera in the studio, I used these cool lamps from Target to light my subjects. This particular lamp style has similar effects of a light box and can work wonders with the right camera settings...other photographers still ask me what type of lighting I used on those images (ok...the secret is out now).

5. Auto focus is your friend. I still use my auto focus often...this setting can work wonders for the photographically challenged.

6. Use your flash in the daylight outside. Lighting your subject and filling in shadows with the camera flash works wonders if used properly...play with the aperture and you will get some cool effects (refer to SEX).

7. Study editing Part of my day is spent shooting and much of it is spent editing the images. The ability to edit your own photos is valuable. I have the latest Photoshop suite, but I use Corel Draw for most of my editing...ease of use, great results...that is what counts.

8. Watch other pros in action I learned quite a bit from watching other photographers in the studio and on location. I've picked up little pieces of advice and technique from other great image makers.

9. Make sure that the model looks the part
When shooting females for glamour and fashion, the makeup artist becomes you MVP (most valuable playa). You can have the most expensive lighting, the greatest camera, a beautiful studio, and a hot wardrobe...but if the makeup is jacked up, you are wasting your time...using great makeup artists changed everything for me.

10. Have fun Creating images can be stressful, tedious, and nerve wrecking (especially when the model and/or client works your nerves), but you should enjoy the creative process. I love what I do and the love comes out in the work. I bought a camera a few years ago just for fun and I'm still enjoying the results...make sure that my model is comfortable, be serious about your work and lighthearted at the same time, and take great pictures!
