TakeGreatPictures.com (TGP): Since you predominately use a digital camera, what do you see as its advantages over an SLR? Kevin Terrell (KT): I appreciate digital for the usual advantages...preview, review, and put images to work immediately...without any dirty ol man making copies of your film for person use. I like the SONY digital 828 because the camera body rotates...creates opportunities for cool angles and creative shots. ![]() © 2005 Kevin Terrell
TGP: Please explain to our readers what Rumba Magazine is and how it has evolved. KT: Rumba is a glamour and fashion magazine in a lookbook format...the images tell the stories. Most major fashion companies release lookbooks every season to highlight their collections...so I created a magazine that highlights collections, the models, celebrities, and much more...imagine a combination of Maxim and Vogue...without all of the "how to tell if your spouse is cheating" articles. Our new joint venture with Zinio.com produces a digital version of the magazine (the format of the future) that makes the publication available worldwide. ![]() © 2005 Kevin Terrell
TGP: What is your technique when shooting? KT: SEX (Shoot-EXperiment). The digital world allows me to create on the spot...I check out the image on the camera and play with white balance, depth perception, angles, and other factors. I shoot knowing that certain things I plan to change later while editing. ![]() © 2005 Kevin Terrell
TGP: How do you get the model to do what you want? [i.e. What do you say to him/her?] KT: I threaten her by saying that if you dont get the pose right I'm gonna take off my clothes (the thought of that immediately makes her snap into place)...seriously I try to make the shoot a team effort...we both have to make the right moves for the images to work. ![]() © 2005 Kevin Terrell
TGP: What do you find most challenging about glamour/fashion photography? KT: The challenge is creating fresh ideas...styling, makeup, backdrops, and the model all come into play when doing something new. ![]() © 2005 Kevin Terrell
TGP: What do you usually bring to the shoot? KT: A great makeup artist, a style team, a big bag of Boston baked beans with an occasional side of Almond M&Ms, and nail polish remover (nothing ruins a photo more thana beautiful girl with a raggedy pedicure). ![]() © 2005 Kevin Terrell
TGP: What job are you most proud of? KT: I've only been shooting for 3 years and I'm proud of the fact that people actually seem to like what I do. I have several favorite images and shoots but I'm am very proud of Rumba Magazine and the work of my designer Chris Hayes, makeup artist Toni Acey and others, stylist Taijuan Wilcox, and the rest of Team Rumba. ![]() © 2005 Kevin Terrell
TGP: What are your current projects? KT: Currently working on the new lookbook and National model search for hip hop star Nelly and his clothing line "Applebottoms" (on Oprah's favorite things list), a new campaign for Marc Ecko watches, a new Atlanta based men's magazine called Xtreme Atlanta, and collaborating with Derek Blanks, David Hickey, and other great photographers for Rumba Magazine. ![]() © 2005 Kevin Terrell
TGP: Where do you see your career going? Where do you want it to go? KT: I want to develop and grow and a photo jock and publisher. I still have a lot to learn and I'm having fun along the way. ![]() © 2005 Kevin Terrell
TGP: Long-term and short-term goals? KT: I want to shoot for the major fashion designers, create incredible images for advertising, and shoot Oprah for the cover of her Magazine! (hey, I wanna be one of her favorite things too :) ![]() © 2005 Kevin Terrell
