Crossover

Malibu is a place where the world seems open, the sky wide and the ocean blue.  It’s the perfect place for Jim Jordan to be.  Jim has been a top celebrity, fashion and advertising photographer for years because of his open and dynamic photography.  Jim’s work, like his personality, is warm and vibrant.  His dynamic client list includes J.Crew, American Express, Vogue, and BMW. He has captured moments with stars like Drew Barrymore, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nicholas Cage, Robert Redford and close friend Charlize Theron.

Jim always knew that beauty and fashion was his future.  As a teenager, he left surfing in Southern California and bought himself a ticket for Milan, dreaming of doing hair and make-up for fashion magazines and great photographers. He stepped off the plane into a foreign world, but with his drive and talent, soon found himself working on photo shoots around the globe.

Doing hair and makeup, Jim soon had a growing circle of model friends. For years, he would pull them aside on shoots and take photos of the work he had done on them.  He never showed the photos to anyone but the models, stashing them instead in a growing box of 11x14’s hidden at home.

Eventually, some models began using Jim’s images for their portfolios, telling clients about his work.  While doing hair and makeup on a J.Crew shoot, the client handed him a camera and asked him to shoot in his spare time on set.  38 of his photos made it into the campaign, and his new career was born.

Since then, Jim’s client list has grown to include respected fashion magazines, advertising campaigns, and celebrities.  His photos have an airy quality to them, a feeling of intimacy and honesty that seems to spring directly from his personality.  Jim recently sat down with TGP overlooking the surf in Malibu, to talk photography and about the challenges of changing careers and becoming a professional photographer.
