Prepare to have your breath taken away. This is the only good advice one can give to those wanting to look at Eric Meola’s photography. You see, Eric’s photos are not the kind you can rifle through by the dozens, not really paying much attention to —like the latest stack from the family vacation to Cancun. Each of Eric’s images seizes your attention, dilates your pupils, and in some cases accelerates your heartbeat to the rhythm of an African drum that begins playing in your head. Eric started his career as a photographer after graduating in 1968 with a degree in English Literature. He assisted Pete Turner in New York City for about a year and a half, and then continued by doing editorial photography for various magazines, including Travel & Leisure, Life and Esquire. But, it was while working for Time magazine that he was asked to travel to Haiti on his first major assignment. Eric went to Haiti with film, a camera, and a passion for photography, and came back with the “Coca Kid,” an image that would launch his career to new heights and set the standard for all his great works to come. Eric has now been shooting for over 30 years and throughout that time he has continued to make images that command our attention and leave us literally speechless. He has won many awards, particularly for his advertising photography, and now has a portfolio as diverse as the world itself. His collection of works ranges from Johnnie Walker or Jeep advertising campaigns, to the cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run album, and finally to his most prized compilation of remote travel photography, which he appropriately titles “The Last Places on Earth.” In this latest collection Eric attempts to highlight the mysteriousness and the preciousness of those last people in our world “who believe in a sense of wonder —in magic, mysticism, and the beauty of life.” The pursuit of “The Last Places on Earth” has transformed him inside and out, and has also taken him around to globe to amazing and out-of-the-way destinations such as Ethiopia, Kenya, India, Burma, Cambodia and many others. TakeGreatPictures caught up with Eric in the last place on Earth you would expect to find him: at home in New York, where he lives with wife and fellow photographer, Joanna McCarthy. >>Click here for the story behind the image... ![]() © 2003 Eric Meola >>Click here for the story behind the image... ![]() © 2003 Eric Meola >>Click here to view the interview with Eric Meola.
