O'Clair made the switch from successful auto mechanic to photographer around the age of twenty-five when he entered the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. However, the SUNY school's two-year program was only part of O'Clair's education. While moonlighting as a taxi driver to help finance his education, O'Clair attended classes, read every photography book he could get his hands on, and practiced his craft as much as possible. Results of his dedication include bragging rights for graduating first in his class. ![]() © 2006 Dennis O'Clair
A piece of advice he received ad nauseum and took seriously was the need for a photographer to be unique in order to survive financially. Using his background in mechanics, he took to motion photography, rigging cameras above speeding cars or on the front of skis. These shots got him noticed by Tony Stone Images, which introduced him to the arena of stock photography. ![]() © 2006 Dennis O'Clair
Not unlike Blaine, O'Clair is often ready for a new challenge, and the 1996 Olympics provided just the bait he needed to foray into underwater photography. His original idea was to shoot competitive swimmers, but his shots have expanded well beyond that original, modest idea.
His work for Fitness Swimmer included a Maui swimsuit spread. Perhaps this everyman's dream job led to his working with fashion models underwater. But he is just as comfortable working with the everyman. ![]() © 2006 Dennis O'Clair
Over a decade since receiving his scuba certification and taking to pools in order to capture truly original images, O'Clair is still practicing his underwater craft. He enjoys giving his clients something that they haven't seen before. Although he is open to pursuing other photographic niches, O'Clair is excited by what technological advances can add to his work. The emerging equipment and his recent move from New York to Candler, North Carolina are currently challenge enough. ![]() © 2006 Dennis O'Clair
