Moscow

Moscow's origins as a symbol of Russian spiritual and political power go back more than 850 years, so it's no surprise that today the city is the barometer and nucleus of the changes sweeping through Russia. Its vitality and chaos are a direct result of the collapse of communism and the efforts of its citizens to reinvent their lives. Nowhere are Russia's contrasts more apparent than here - ancient monasteries and ultra-modern monoliths stand side by side, and New Russian millionaires and poverty-stricken pensioners walk the same streets. The populace now prefer impromptu street markets to the huge state department stores, and churches which were destroyed or abandoned during the Soviet era are being lovingly restored. But the real flavour of this city is in its small nooks and crannies, each of them unique.

The Chung Yeung Festival

Also known as Autumn Remembrance, this festival is similar to Ching Ming in the spring, in that families journey to the graves of their ancestors to perform cleansing rites and pay their respects. They share the food they bring along, especially Chinese cakes, ko, which is a homonym of the word for "top". Some believe that those who eat these cakes will be promoted to the top. With the cooler weather and clear skies at this time of the year, many people simply take the opportunity to go on one of Hong Kong's many hikes. Why not join a hiking tour for the day!

Melk Abbey

The reconstruction of the abbey was for the most part complete by 1736. Two years later a fire destroyed much of the new complex. Abbot Berthold, already advanced in years, immediately decreed than his life's work should be rebuilt, but he did not live to see it finally completed.  The baroque age brought one of the undisputed heydays in the abbey's history. Within the space of 34 years the entire complex was rebuilt. Berthold Dietmayr (1670-1739) was appointed Abbot of Melk in 1700, when he was only thirty years of age. He set out to externalize the abbey's importance by lending it a new exterior.

Successive governments have made a real effort to preserve the country's image as an ecotourism heaven, making Costa Rica one of the best places to experience the tropics naturally and with minimal impact.
