The 10th Annual X Games is tentatively scheduled for this date. It features the sport of surfing in National Surf League's "The Game" format. Broadcast on ESPN, this new event pits two eight-surfer teams in a play off of the time-honored rivalry between the East (Florida) and West (California) Coast surfers. Each team also includes two wild cards, allowing both teams to add surfers from other parts of the world. Staged much like football with four quarters and time outs, the best scores from heats are combined for a team score.
The little cowboy town of Sturgis in the Black Hills of North Dakota expands its population by many times as several hundred thousand motorcycle riders congregate for a weeklong party.

2004 Popular Photography Workshop Series: Michigan
Join Popular Photography & Imaging and professional photographers Monte Nagler and Rick Sammon, August 20-22, 2004 in Michigan. Experience the "way of the west" as you spend the weekend photographing the incredible scenery and beautiful light at the Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury, Michigan.
For one weekend at least, the residents of Virginia City are proud to be old fashioned. Along the wooden boardwalks of this authentic western town, 19th-century rugmakers, dressmakers, quilters, soapmakers, blacksmiths, coppersmiths, heirloom gardeners, hat makers, weavers, spinners, and saddle makers display their wares as the stagecoach ambles by and the whistle-blowing 1910 steam locomotive pulls into the depot. The 1864 Grand Victorian Ball, preceded by a sunset promenade on the boardwalk, begins with the Grand March and music from the 1860s. Visitors, urged to attend in period dress (which can be rented in town), are encouraged to fill their dance cards for waltzes, schottisches, and polkas.
