2002 Burning Man Project - Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA
Neopagan. Postapocalyptic. Nouveau hippie. Ordered anarchy. Radical self-expression. Temporary autonomy. These are just a few of the catchy terms used to describe the otherwise intangible Burning Man Project. The Village Voice described this Labor Day Weekend circus ...in the northern Nevada desert as ". . . a guerrilla war against the commodification of the collective imagination." Wow! Where do we sign up?!
In 1986, on the heels of a messy break up, Larry Harvey burned a wooden effigy of his ex with friends on the last weekend of summer. What started out as a neat-o way to bring closure to a soured relationship has evolved into an ongoing "project" that brings together artists, performers, techies, ravers, and deviants from all over the world in a so-called "experiment in a temporary community." Over 12,000 revelers show up for the spectacle. Nude acrobats, paragliding, mock celebrity crucifixions, toilet surfing, and a drive-by shooting gallery are just some of the oddities and activities you might run across. And remember, no one is a spectator at Burning Man—everyone is a participant!
