Texas Glider Rally - Marfa, TX

Glider pilots from around the USA will make a pilgrimage to west Texas beginning June 1, 2004 when master glider instructor Burt Compton hosts the fourth annual "Glider Rally" at Marfa Airport.  For the public, Compton will offer twenty minute introductory rides in his FAA certified two-seat glider. He will also share his thirty-six years of flying experience with visiting pilots from around the United States. Privately owned racing gliders will participate in cross country flying tasks over the Big Bend area of Texas, coached by National Soaring Champion John Byrd.   Towed aloft by a powered airplane, the gliders release the towrope and circle upwards in the invisible thermal updrafts found under cumulus clouds, sometimes gliding for distances of over 500 miles. Six Texas State soaring records have been established at Marfa in the past two years.

To plan your soaring adventure, or to obtain a glider ride gift certificate, call Kathie or Burt Compton at 800-667-WING (9464) or visit their website at www.FLYGLIDERS.com.

15th Annual Mariachi USA Festival - Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles has a huge Latin population and is home to the largest number of Mexicans of any city in the world after Mexico City. Each year Mariachi Plaza in Boyle Heights hosts this celebration of the world-famous Mexican music.

Mexican influence and culture can be seen all over LA, from the style of the architecture to the names of the streets and neighbourhoods. Mexican food is available everywhere and the airwaves are alive with all types of Mexican music from ranchera to banda, rock en Español and of course, mariachi.

Mariachi originated in the state of Jalisco (in Western Mexico) in the late 19th century and used the instruments brought by the Spanish, namely the guitar, violin and later, the trumpet. Mariachis used to find work playing in the haciendas, but after the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920) the haciendas had to let them go and they would wander from town to town, eventually taking to playing in public venues for a fee. With the advent of radio and television their popularity grew and mariachis can now be found all over Latin America.

As an integral part of Mexican culture and history, mariachis can also be found in Los Angeles. One of the best times to see them play is during the Mariachi Festival. The mariachis converge on Mariachi Plaza in Boyle Heights, dressed in wide brimmed hats and studded charro suits and perform a wide variety of mariachi styles. The songs speak about machismo, love, betrayal, death, politics and revolutionary heroes and their enjoyment is increased by lashings of beer and tequila. The finest Mexican food is also available - tacos, quesadillas and burritos. All in all, this is a feast of Mexican culture.

Nova Scotia International Tattoo

No, this is not a Canadian gathering of body art enthusiasts.  In this case, the term tattoo refers to a 17th century "last call" for soldiers to leave the tavern and return to their sleeping quarters, signaled by the beating of drums in the street.  Today, the term conveys the world-class extravaganza that is the Nova Scotia International Tattoo.  The Tattoo is the largest annual indoor event in North America, featuring over 2,000 military and civilian participants from Canada and over twenty other countries. The Tattoo consistently draws an audience of over 60,000.  Among the featured events are music, dance, drama, gymnastics, comedy, military displays, and competitions, all of which add to the fast pace of the two and a half hour show.  The Tattoo started in 1979, when men and women from the Canadian Navy, Army, and Air Force joined their civilian counterparts to present the show to Queen Elizabeth.  Ever since, the theme of the annual fanfare has been "Bond of Friendship".
