Flash Demo

by Jill Enfield
Here's How to Use Your Flash

During a recent Mentor Series trek to Ireland, several students wanted to talk about how to use their flashes inside. Instead of simply talking about how to do it, we all gathered around a castle staircase with daylight streaming in for a live demo.

Basically, a professional photographer on assignment has learned to control the lighting instead of using the camera on automatic. It takes practice, but is easy and doable if you pay attention to the situation that you are in. Most amateur photographers shoot with their flashes on full power and end up with a photograph with bright, harsh lighting that detracts from the photograph. By ³dialing² your flash down and letting the ambient light (room light) be recorded on your film, you can get some beautiful and subtle images.

Throughout the demonstration, which is shown below, we switched the power on the flash to get different results. It might help to have your flashes and camera in hand as you look at the images and see how to set your cameras.  Remember to have fun, experiment and learn what your camera and flash can do to make great images.
