There's an artistic element of color or composition, subject and mood. There's the excitment of telling a story
with a single picture. The challenge of capturing that singular moment in time, to preserve it forever. Sometimes it's the luck of being at the right place at the right time. Or that the surprise when a shot you
think turns out bad, reveals something awesome you never even saw.
Lookin' out my backdoor! This is not a sunset from some exotic local, rather the front yard of my house in Medford, Long Island. This was a right time, right place photo. I don't think people take enough time to just look up and appreciate the sky.

more than a quick look to the left down a street. People who like to take pictures tend to see more of the world just by looking around.

I was able to get this picture from behind the viewing glass with a very cooperative and photogenic hippo.![]() Photo: Roy Mauritsen Long Island Moments Some would consider this a typical "Long Island" Photo. But
that doesn't make it any less of nice and peaceful moment. ![]() Photo: Roy Mauritsen Sunset Taken in California. Once the composition was
established it was just a matter of watching the sunset. I am proud of the calmness, color and "order" of the waves on the left and the contrasting dark"chaos" of the tree branches.![]() Photo: Roy Mauritsen
