Coon Dog Day Festival in Saluda, NC

Every dog has its day, and the racoon-hunting dogs of Saluda, North Carolina, are no exception. On the Saturday after July 4th, these dogs are paraded through the streets to play witness to an incredible tug of war between the firemen of Saluda which involves a barrel, two water jets and a hill.

As temperatures rise, crowds gather to watch a curious tug-of-war between the local Fire and Rescue teams. A 45-gallon drum is rolled out onto the yellow lines in the centre of the sloping road - there's a toss-up to decide who'll be at the disadvantage - then each team of firemen, who stand ten feet apart on either side of the drum, turn on their hoses to propel the drum in the opposite direction. The barrel races back and forth as the water jets battle it out and, according to the accuracy and expertise of the men directing the hose, one team is pushed back with drum in hot pursuit.

If the tug-of-war isn't enough entertainment, you'll also find contests and judging for the dogs, craft stalls, live music, a parade and street dance, a fun run and the 5K dash.

Bastille Day Festival in Philadelphia, PA

Each July the storming of the Bastille is remembered with a re-enactment at Philadelphia's Eastern State Penitentiary. During the day the old prison is open as usual before, at 5.30pm, the grim walls are stormed by the armed troops of the revolution!

As Marie Antoinette tosses sweets from the tower (let them eat cake) the reenactors of the Old Fort Mifflin Historical Society lay seige to the prison. After capturing the rogue monarch, they drag her to a real functioning guillotine, where the crowds decide her fate.

The event promises to be more in the spirit of Monty Python than Robespierre and visitors are encouraged to attend dressed as medieval French peasants.

After the victory of the revolution, the Penitentiary reopens for rare evening tours, which last about 20 minutes and provide a quick introduction to the building and its history. There is also a Bastille Day neighbourhood party.

Fiesta Mexicana in Topeka, KS

Into its 74th year, Fiesta Mexicana has grown tremendously through the decades. Initial Fiestas were small events, held tightly within Topeka’s Mexican barrio. Parishioners and extended family were the only attendees and food items were cooked from the home and brought to the church grounds to sell. Entertainment was local with the emphasis on music and dances from the homeland of Mexico. Ask a longtime parishoner what “memorias” come to mind from past Fiestas, and the answers would be as colorful as the event itself. Children relishing the many flavors of raspas (snow cones). Youth mischievously cracking cascarones (confetti eggs) over a friend’s head. The sound of gritos (Spanish for a long shout of happiness) to ranchero or corrido music played. All the sites and sounds recalled on those warm summer nights…

Mighty Mud Mania - Scottsdale, AZ

"Mighty Mud Mania" began in 1976 as the "Shout It Out Decathlon," a promotional gimmick for Johnson's Wax "Shout" Spray pre-wash. The activity was held in Chaparral Park in Scottsdale and the Johnson's Wax Company provided 300 white t-shirts for the participants. Johnson's dropped the program because our Arizona mud was too tough for the pre-wash. However, the City of Scottsdale felt the activity was so successful, that our Parks and Recreation Division incorporated the event into the summer recreation program. Re-named "Mighty Mud Mania," the activity has been held since then as the culminating activity of all the Scottsdale Parks and Recreation summer programs.

Lumberjack Days in Stillwater, MN

Lumberjack Days, held in and around Stillwater, Minnesota, is an annual celebration encompassing lumberjack displays, music, kids' events, a treasure hunt, running races and the largest choreographed firework display north of Chicago.

The four-day party takes place mainly in Stillwater's Lowell Park, adjacent to the beautiful St Croix River in the historic downtown area. A thriving logging town until the late 1800s, Stillwater takes pride in preserving its traditions and Lumberjack Days turns the town into a giant party.

The Ironjack shows give some of the best lumberjacks around a chance to show off their skills in spectacular events such as the springboard chop (where jacks climb a nine-foot spar pole and, while balanced on a narrow springboard, chop off the top of the pole) and the log roll.

There is also a number of events in the preceding weeks, full details of which can be found on the website.

Garlic Festival in Gilroy, CA

Gilroy claims to be the garlic capital of the USA and at this festival the fragrant bulb is incorporated into every possible offering - a garlic lover's paradise.
The festival originated as the brainchild of one Dr Rudy Melone, now sadly deceased. In 1978, when Melone read an article describing Arleux, France as "Garlic Capital of the World", he decided that Gilroy deserved the title instead. Thus, in 1979 the first Gilroy Garlic Festival took place, and a phenomenon was born.

The festival's Gourmet Alley is the setting for some truly delicious cooking. Numerous delicacies are on the menu, and you can try them all thanks to the "combo" plate, a selection of all the most popular dishes. Should all that cooking bring out the chef in you, you can take part in the annual Cook Off competition.

Garlic doesn't prevail throughout the festival, however. It's very much a family event, and since not all kids are very keen on garlic, the children's area of the festival offers alternative refreshment: wholesome Californian munchies like corn dogs, nachos, soda and sno-cones.

On the entertainment front, there is a kaleidoscope of magic, mime and music, with plenty of audience participation, not to mention the odd ventriloquist, juggler or barn show. There are also over 100 craft stalls, displaying and selling hats, crockery, stained glass, original jewellery, one-of-a-kind sculptures and paintings, all of course with a little hint of garlic.
