Mid-Atlantic Hermit Crab Challenge takes place on July 14th.

The Crab is King at this one-of-a-kind event that’s fun for the entire family! The day begins with judging for the Miss Curvaceous Crustacean Beauty Pageant, where hermit crabs are presented in their own unique decorated displays and judged on creativity and flair. Marvel at the decorated shells of entries like Spider Crab, Hermit the Hulk, and Beauty and the Crab! A distinguished panel of “crabby” judges bestows the Miss Curvaceous Crustacean title upon the most deserving crab. Hermit crab preliminary races lead to the Crustacean 500, where the winner is crowned and awarded the Order of the Mercury Claw trophy! Crabs race on a specially-designed circular track, where all the “crabtestants” are placed in the center. At the sound of the starting pistol, crabs scurry to the outer circle at the edge of the track, where it’s all about the survival of the “crabbiest!” Beauty pageant and race trophies are awarded at the end of the day.

Fiesta Mexicana - Topeka, Kansas

Fiesta Mexicana runs from July 17th to the 21st.

Fiesta Mexicana has grown tremendously through the decades. Initial Fiestas were small events, held tightly within Topeka’s Mexican barrio. Parishioners and extended family were the only attendees and food items were cooked from the home and brought to the church grounds to sell. Entertainment was local with the emphasis on music and dances from the homeland of Mexico. Ask a longtime parishoner what “memorias” come to mind from past Fiestas, and the answers would be as colorful as the event itself. Children relishing the many flavors of raspas (snow cones). Youth mischievously cracking cascarones (confetti eggs) over a friend’s head. The sound of gritos (Spanish for a long shout of happiness) to ranchero or corrido music played.

The Delaware State Fair - Harrington, Delaware

The Delaware State Fair runs from July 19th to the 28th.

The Delaware State Fair, as it is known today, began as an idea quietly conceived around a potbelly stove in the Harrington railroad station in 1919. The number of community-focused residents interested in starting this enterprise grew quickly as word of the plan leaked out. As the number who showed up for meetings grew, it became obvious that the railroad station could no longer serve as the meeting spot, and the group began to meet at the fire hall. The drive of these ambitious men helped formulate the Kent and Sussex County Fair which was incorporated in January 1920.

Today, the Kent and Sussex County Fair is now known as the Delaware State Fair and boasts attendance of over 307,000. As it exists today, the nearly 300 acre fairground encompasses several businesses including The Centre Ice Rink, the Harrington Raceway, Inc., and the Midway Slots & Simulcast. Despite the awesome trend of bringing dynamic entertainers and a thrilling carnival, the Fair maintains its roots in agriculture. And every year, the Fair continues its tradition of being "Bigger and Better Than Ever."
