World Championship Punkin Chunkin - Millsboro, DE

So Haloween's over and your pumpkin is slowly starting to decay.  You could throw it in the trash, but what fun would that be?  A better way to get rid of it is to join the festivities at the World Championship Punkin Chunkin, where contraptions of all shapes and sizes get ready, aim and fire at breaking world records in the field of pumpking launching.  Aside from the displays of engineering might, there are plenty of cooking festivities, with contests including best presentation and "most use of pumpkin".  This year, the event features a concert performance by the Charlie Daniels band as well.

30-somethingth Occasional Doo Dah Parade - Pasadena, CA

Imagine a parade with absolutely no cohesive theme or purpose.  That parade is the "occasional" (as opposed to annual) Doo Dah Parade held in Pasadena, CA.  Over 45,000 people come to attend this somewhat bizarre pre-Thanksgiving festival, which was voted Best Parade in 2004 by Reader's Digest.  The parade spoofs the pageantry of the annual Rose Parade, held each New Year's Day in the same town of Pasadena.

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade - New York, NY

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City gets bigger and better each year, and offers a great venue for family pictures. It starts at 9:00am and travels down Central Park West, then down Broadway to 34th St. You'll see floats, giant balloons, marching bands and famous sports and entertainment figures. They'll make nice photos, of course, but shots of the expression on Junior's face as the Snoopy balloon drifts 10 stories overhead will be priceless.
