"The Chameleon" - Charles Orrico and his Pair of Nikons Share Their Secrets to Successful Advertising Photography

"The Chameleon" - Charles Orrico and his Pair of Nikons Share Their Secrets to Successful Advertising Photography

Corporate and industrial photographer Charles Orrico has perfected the art of pleasing the client through collaboration, innovation, and a great deal of patience.

Article rating: 8.12

Charles Orrico knows which side his bread is buttered on—the client side. “They’re writing the check,” he says. Keeping that in mind has been paramount to Orrico’s success, in addition to a willingness to shoot anything, anywhere, within any time frame. “In today’s climate,” he says, “you really have to be versatile. Years ago, you were a specialist. You did editorial, or you were a food photographer, or you were a people photographer. Today, you have to be a chameleon.”

Becoming an expert on the fly means doing extensive research on his subjects which have ranged from vitamins to Carmen Electra and everything in between. Orrico feels equally comfortable shooting a nuclear plant as he does shooting a baby or a Porsche. “I never felt it necessary to specialize in only one area of photography. Whether it be people, places, or things, I specialize in what I happen to be shooting at any given time.”

A graduate of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, Orrico once considered a career designing cars and his appreciation of the artistry is apparent in his automobile photography. A proclivity for industrial design may be what makes Orrico the first choice for industrial clients such as Twin Laboratories, CPI Aerostructures, Vitra Health Care, and Hofstra University. Corporate clients, as well, find that Orrico has a gift for jazzing up lackluster offices and Joe Shmo personnel—using his trademark color gels to communicate the drama of a company or an executive for their annual reports.

Though Orrico is no stranger to editorial work—his work has appeared in publications such as US Camera (where he scored his first cover), Parents Magazine, Pulse, Studio Photography & Design and Porsche Panorama Magazine—most of his business these days revolves around the advertising end. “You have to go where the dollars are,” he says.
