Story & Interview by Bill Eidson Travels With The Lighthouse Lady
At its best, photography is all about passion. And Carolyn Ortiz certainly brings that to her quest to capture images of all 670 lighthouses in the United States. Now in her sixties, this West Babylon, New York resident has traveled to all but a handful of states and has photographed over 400 lighthouses.
Carolyn devotes much of her life to this passion. She works part time and spends most available free time either on the road or researching lighthouses and their histories. She gets a lot back from her photographic passion: she’s met good friends, won photo contests, and has also been interviewed on television.
Her work is also seen: Her prints were displayed at The Stony Brook Museum’s study of Long Island Lighthouses, and she’s done slideshows for the Bellport Historical Society, Fire Island Lighthouse, Deer Park Library, Women’s Club of Massapequa, Huntington Historical Society, and many others. Her photo of the Tarrytown, NY lighthouse was on the cover of Lighthouse Digest magazine, and she has also won photo prizes in their contests. Ortiz has even started a business selling composite photos of her lighthouse images over the web.
