Candid Photography by Stephen Canning Here's How to Take Candid Photos That Capture Moments of Truth. Article rating: 8.00 |
Taking pictures that are a cut above the rest. We all have photo albums full of shots of people smiling and posing for the camera, but this is hardly the way that life really is. Many of the most compelling photographs will be when the subjects didn’t know they were being photographed. People look their best when they are relaxed.
For example, when photographing a group of friends, their genuine smiles as they laugh at a joke will be much more animated and interesting than a posed smile. In travel photography, shots of people going about their everyday business will be more telling than shots of people posing for your camera.
A great way to get candid shots is to use a telephoto or zoom lens. This lets you take shots from farther away, making you less conspicuous. You also have to make sure your camera is handy and that you can use it quickly. The fleeting moments that you are trying to capture won’t wait for you to open your camera bag.
Even if your subject knows you are there and knows you have your camera, they will forget about it. If you are patient, you can wait for the right moment and snap a shot before they have time to pose. One sneaky way to get people into the right position for a photograph but not posed is to tell them that you are going to take a photograph, and arrange them in the right positions. Then, tell them that you just have to adjust the camera settings before taking the shot. They will relax, and wait for you to tell them to say cheese. During this time, take your pictures when they aren’t expecting it. The natural expressions you will get will be well worth the extra effort!
