Bob Krist

Travel Photographer

Bob Krist is a freelance photographer who works regularly on assignment for magazines such as National Geographic Traveler, Smithsonian, Islands, Caribbean Travel & Life, and the German magazines Globo and GEO Saison. His photos from these worldwide assignments have won awards in the Pictures of the Year, Communication Arts, and World Press Photo competitions. During his work, he has been stranded on a glacier in Iceland, nearly run down by charging bulls in southern India, and knighted with a cutlass during a Trinidad voodoo ceremony. He was named Travel Photographer of the Year by the Society of American Travel Writers and his work was featured on the cover and in a 10 page portfolio in a recent issue of the prestigious publication, Communication Arts. In 2000, he was honored at the Eisie Awards for Magazine Photography in the Travel category.

Along with his magazine work, Bob photographed the coffeetable books Caribbean and Portrait of the Caribbean (Graphic Arts Center Publishing), and West Point: The US Military Academy (Harmony House).

An accomplished writer as well as a photographer, he served for seven years as contributing editor and photography columnist at Travel & Leisure magazine. Currently, Bob is a contributing editor at both National Geographic Traveler and Popular Photography magazines, where he writes photography columns, as well as writing and photographing how-to and feature articles for several other national publications, including National Wildlife, Outdoor and Nature Photography, and Outside.

Bob recently lectured at National Geographic headquarters in Washington DC as part of the Society’s Masters of Photography series. He has been the keynote speaker at the national convention of the Society of American Travel Writers and at regional meetings of the American Society of Media Photographers.

Krist teaches travel photography workshops at the Maine and Tuscany Photo Workshops. A former professional actor, he hosted the premiere season of Nature’s Best Photography, a 13-part series for National Wildlife Productions on the Outdoor Life Network. His book, Secrets of Lighting on Location, was published by Amphoto in June of ’96. His current book, Spirit of Place: The Art of The Traveling Photographer, also by Amphoto,was published in Spring of ’00. His next book, In Tuscany with Frances Mayes, will be published in October 2000 by Broadway Books.

Bob lives in New Hope, Pennsylvania, with his wife Peggy and their three sons, Matthew, Brian, and Jonathan.
