1) Approach people in a gentle, respectful way.

2) Tell them in a clear, concise, honest manner why you want to photograph them.

3) Encourage them to feel at ease by directing or coaching them.

4) Come up with a policy for handling difficult situations (i.e. money, minors, dangerous circumstances).

5) Decide for yourself what makes an arresting photograph and know what you're looking for.

6) Show your interest in people, and they will be interested in you.

7) Be confident. It will help your subjects feel more comfortable.

8) Be patient and careful.

9) Involve them in the experience by offering to send them a print or a jpeg.

10) Ask for a model release to protect yourself.
