Coinciding with the Aperture Gallery exhibition In Almost Every Picture, curated and edited by Erik Kessels, and the release of the accompanying limited-edition volume set from the cult classic book series of the same title (published by Aperture), Erik Kessels will discuss his idiosyncratic collection of vernacular photography culled from thousands of found images. These fascinating series include a Spanish woman photographed by her husband between 1956 and 1968; sisters who dress alike taken in Europe during the 1940s; photographs taken by a taxi driver of his taxi and passenger at different “holiday spots” locations; and a beloved dalmatian and her owner growing old together while walking through various European locations. In this exhibition, and the accompanying books, Kessels brings new life to these images and the touching stories they tell. It is a privileged look at private memories that in this new context, become profoundly enigmatic, and at times sublime.
