Amy Stein: New American Fables is a selection of large-scale color photographs from the artist’s series Domesticated and Halloween in Harlem. Stein’s narrative images juxtapose fantastical and seemingly fictitious elements with rural and urban settings. Based on actual newspaper stories and oral histories, Domesticated explores our paradoxical relationship with animals. Halloween in Harlem is inspired by Helen Levitt’s portraits of children and shows us a world where the familiar rituals of childhood are played out in the vibrant but gritty New York neighborhood. ![]() Watering Hole © 2005 Amy Stein Courtesy Robert Koch Gallery, San Francisco Stein was raised in Washington, DC, and Karachi, Pakistan.
